Partnering with W.E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy

9 Apr

Greiner

Since our founding in 2011 we have always run things here at Tree Fall Sounds in the spirit of a non-profit. We are now transforming our little record label into a true non-profit, expanding our mission, and extending our focus beyond that of a record label. Our new Mission Statement…

“Tree Fall Sounds is a non-profit dedicated to supporting, fostering, and inspiring sustainable creativity. We embrace localism, collaborating with individuals and organizations for the benefit of arts and culture in the communities where we live.”

Our ultimate goal is to provide support to established local artists, to foster the growth of young artists, and to inspire artistic endeavors of all kinds. Bringing artists from all walks of life together, we hope to generate sustainable creativity throughout the metroplex.

One of our purposes will be to provide foundation-type support to various entities. To that end, we are honored to announce our very first partnership with W.E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy in Oak Cliff.

W.E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy is a DISD middle school for students who have an interest in the fine arts and who wish to develop their individual artistic talents. It is the only Fine Arts Academy in the district offering concentrations in visual art, band, choir, dance, international dance, mariachi, orchestra, piano, and theater. 85.8% of the students at Greiner come from economically disadvantaged homes and less than 0.2% of the school’s annual budget is directed towards co-curricular/extracurricular activities. Needless to say, they need some funding.

In the coming months we will be announcing a series of fundraisers with proceeds going to the development and support of W.E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy’s Department of Music.

Selfishly, Greiner students walk past our home/office every day. We couldn’t be more excited to support the development of the music program for these young men and women, and we can’t wait to see more Greiner students sitting on our retaining wall, waiting for their rides home, with instrument cases in hand.

We hope you will find it in your music loving hearts to help raise badly needed funds for these budding young musicians. We hope you will join us in spreading the passion for local music. We hope you will help us inspire those that will be responsible for the future of arts and culture in our communities.

Support. Foster. Inspire.

Binder Waxes Poetic About Vinyl

For anyone that has asked… Oak Cliff People does not publish articles on-line, so here is a copy of the article. Thanks again to Georgia Fisher for not making me sound like a dummy, and thanks to local music, and thanks to anyone who has supported me in my little venture, Tree Fall Sounds. Much love; mush lub.

Coming 1/15/13 . . . Datahowler, ‘The Crystal Gazers’ 10″ Single

29 Nov

Datahowler, born Ross Edman, is a Mad Scientist from Dallas, Texas. A musician, producer, designer and wizard. At a young age Ross trained classically in percussive arts eventually moving on to guitar, keys and sequencers. His history traverses many genres from touring in Hardcore outfits to Motown revival acts, to creating indie mash ups and making tripped out space beats. His interests include philosophy, islands, typography and science fiction. He weighs 165 lbs. and stands about 5′ 9″.

Abracadabra. This is where Velvet Blue Music (Huntington Beach, CA), Tree Fall Sounds (Dallas, TX), and Spune (DFW, Texas) enter the picture. A collective effort to educate the universe about Datahowler and his gifts. Or, at least assist in pulling the rabbit from the hat. The label trio having already introduced a 7″ vinyl series, felt it seemed only natural to include Datahowler. Except this 7″ grew to be a 10″!

Datahowler’s latest release, “The Crystal Gazers” comes in the form of a limited edition 10″ colored vinyl / digital EP. It’s 5 songs and 20 minutes of Ross’ favorite sonic compositions. In some ways, it is kind of cheeky like his latest video, but it also carries the weight of a more serious tone. The human condition and struggle with death, heartbreak and survival.

“Now here is an amazing chill artist called Datahowler, when I came across his stuff it really stunned me at how good this music is!” – NME

“A science fiction-inspired romp through hip-hop, downtempo, and other genres.” - Prefix Magazine

“The future sound is upon us. Datahowler is sending signals from his Dallas base to us all, communicating through the medium of his music: beat music reminiscent of the likes of Hudson Mohawke and James Blake, filled with hip hop references, spacey 8-bit experimentalism, howling chilled-out or fast-forwarded high pitched garage-esque vocals and artwork that reminds me of Ghostly International‘s own experimental ambient producer Tycho aka ISO50.” – Bad Fotography

Coming 3/6/12 . . . Doug Burr, “Trembling Lips and Pale Fingertips” 7″ Single

17 Feb

‘Trembling Lips and Pale Fingertips’ (out on 3/06) is the newest offering from Doug Burr featuring alternate versions of songs from his critically acclaimed record, O Ye Devastator. It will be released digitally and as a limited edition 7″ with 2 tracks on the vinyl and a 4-track download card.

For those who are unfamiliar with Doug Burr, he is a Denton, TX local troubadour . . .folk hero. After 3 full length albums, including the critically acclaimed O Ye Devastator, Burr has carved his path in music. His carefully crafted, heart-felt songs seem to resonate with all who hear them. On stage, be it Mr. Burr alone or accompanied by a full band, no one leaves unaffected. Call it folk, roots, americana, twang, folk pop . . . call it whatever you like, we’ve always had a hard time choosing a name for it.

Burr’s music means different things to different people, though there’s an underlying personal connection to each. Below are a few quotes from what others are saying:

Exquisitely detailed, slow and deliberate“- Paste Magazine

“Burr evokes distinctive voices such as Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy or Red House Painters’ Mark Kozelek. These warm, inviting compositions are effortlessly beautiful.”- Fort Worth Weekly

“Burr shares an intrinsic knowledge of song dynamics with the likes of Jeff Tweedy, and has a voice that tugs at the heart strings. Brilliant! ” – Americana UK

Doug Burr “Trembling Lips and Pale Fingertips” is the second in a series of 7″s being released as a joint effort by Velvet Blue Music, Spune, and Tree Fall Sounds.

Coming 2/28/12 . . . Gold Beach, “Gold Beach/The Soft Effect” 7″ Single

9 Feb

Initially hailing from the Houston area, the principle songwriters of Gold Beach, Tony Daugherty and Michael Winningham, grew up on the same street. The two relocated to Austin and put the band together, which includes a plethora of regional talent.

Their self released first record, “Habibti,” was called a “carefully crafted debut” by the Austin Chronicle. Gold Beach has supported national bands such as Memoryhouse, Talkdemonic, Wooden Birds, Balmorhea and recently completed a Daytrotter session. KUT/NPR Austin had the band in studio and Texas Music Matters/NPR included the band in their “Best of 2011″ list. The band has been hard at work and already has made plans in the studio with renown producer John Congleton (St. Vincent, the Walkmen, Wye Oak) to start work on the next record.

Gold Beach “Gold Beach/The Soft Effect” out 2/28 is the first in a series of 7″s being released as a joint effort by Velvet Blue Music, Spune, and Tree Fall Sounds. 2 tracks on beautiful white vinyl, which includes a previously unreleased song and a download card with an whopping 6 tracks! We anticipate great things for the band in 2012!
